Travel and the screen are made for each other - and I am lucky enough to make a range of travel films for The Independent, the Evening Standard and other partners. I hope they provide inspiration, information and even entertainment - at least when things go wrong. For the past decade I have been lucky enough to work with a director named Doug Bolton, who somehow manages to make every destination look exciting and enticing, even if the presenter doesn't. You can find the results of our work here.
Simon Calder Showreel
Since he first hit the road for the BBC Travel Show in 1996, Simon Calder has made more top-quality travel films than anyone else - and one or two TV appearances when getting around gets messy.
This compilation is by the longest-suffering director in television, Douglas Bolton, who has created dozens of films since the pair started working together on 48 Hours in Singapore in 2007.

Madeira: Simon’s Top 5

I first came to Madeira in the year 2000. Yes, I was very young, thank you. Since then, I've returned many times and I want to share my favourites with you.
Madeira: Island Culture
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Being on holiday is all about indulgence and relaxation. But if you delve into the culture of your destination, you'll find it all the more enriching, enlightening and enjoyable. That is especially true on Portugal’s precious oceanic possession, the island of Madeira. Since humans first settled in here in the year 1419, they have been coming up with innovations that improve the island for local...
Madeira: Amazing landscapes

Wherever you are in Madeira, wilderness is never far away. The island rising from the Atlantic, 17 degrees west of Greenwich, comprises a compelling mix of rock, forest and seascapes. Aim as high as you like.
Madeira: Get Active

A natural playground rising from the ocean: that sums up Madeira. Holidaymakers have long converged on the island in search of warmth, relaxation and indulgence. But this Atlantic fragment is also a great destination for seekers of adventure.
Madeira: First Resorts
Просмотров 49810 месяцев назад
Wherever you are on Madeira, you are always less than 10km from the Atlantic. And one of the joys of the island is the range of great oceanside locations to play - and stay. There's a lot to be said for staying in one of the great hotels looking out across the Bay of Funchal - and a whole range of different resorts are dotted around the island.
Madeira: Gastro heaven

If you don’t arrive in Madeira with an appetite, you will soon acquire one. Few people enjoy and drinking more than I do, which makes Madeira a very happy place for me. Among the formidable chefs and winemakers on the island, the accent is emphatically on locally sourced food and drink.
48 Hours in Antalya with Simon Calder
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.11 месяцев назад
More than 30 million passengers pass through Antalya airport every year. It’s the main gateway for the Turkish Riviera. Understandably many of the arriving travellers head straight to the beach resort for sea, sun and indulgence, or go to the golf course. But I hope to persuade you that the fine city of Antalya itself is well worth 48 hours of your precious time.

Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way with Simon Calder

Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way binds together breathtaking locations along the shore where the ocean reaches Europe - with rich heritage, attractions and activities to enliven the experience. It’s a brilliant concept for visitors: over 1,600 miles of scenic roads and trails that wrap around the nation’s west coast. For this film, I started at Malin Head - the northernmost point of the island of Ir...
Dalaman: Hidden Adventures with Simon Calder

DALAMAN My first-ever touchdown on Turkish territory was at Dalaman: located in the southwest of the country, giving access to some of the most captivating stretches of the Mediterranean shore. On my first trip, I was enticed - like many travellers - by blue skies, blue seas and soft sand. Since then I have returned many times, and discovered that the allure goes much deeper. Above the coastlin...

Having been to Bodrum, I wish you had explained that most of the big resort hotels are a long way from the town. It's about 30 minutes by taxi to most of the resorts around the peninsula, so they are fairly self-contained and designed for people to stay there most of the time. I chose the Marmara because it's the only resort that is actually in Bodrum.
This video is so well done!
did he say 18hundred years?!...
Anybody noticed him rapping the first part of the introduction? "I just touched down in Valleta's" 0:20
Great video. I still love your 48 hours in Tokyo one from years ago.
🎉me encanta
Brilliant documentary, Simon! Makes me really eager to return and explore more of Ireland. From Northern Ireland to the Republic, it's one beautiful island with very lovely people and an amazingly rich history. Much love from Nigeria 🇳🇬
Hi Simon, a nice one & your speech and explanation are amazing! thank you ❤
Tidy Vid, Thanks Simon.
Looking forward to our visit!!
Great video, thank you! ☺ I'm now thinking of taking my bike down to Inishowen from Belfast
If only it was widened it has been deepened since opening could be more useful
Hay Simon, I was thinking of going to Gibraltar this year, we’re not flushed unfortunately, do you know of any good hotels and an all inclusive package holiday there. Would so love to here from you on this ☺️
This canal is far from bastard Israel and inglorious bastard Europe to poke nose in it
12:50 leaving as a 10 year old from Sligo to London in 1989 hurts when you hear that Inis Eoghan Island, and you didn't know it mean Owen's Island because tEnglish Schools don't offer the choice to learn Irish, it makes me feel really sad that I've missed so much of my history and culture..... Must feel the same for so many children that move to other countries after living in your own for the first few years. Maybe that explains why England has issues with the other youngsters from different races and religions who have moved to the country from another at a young age too.. The young muslims and black kids in England would definitely benefit far more from living in their birth country too. Children thrive around their own people without a doubt...
So we should all just have stayed home?
very nice video! and highly interesting!
And dont fordet my favorite sightseeing the "long Ann" (die l"ange Anna")^^❤ I thing she is same of the other side of the sea the scotish "Oldenburg man of store" or how ever Asterix schottischer hintersten calls, its my favorite sideseeing place/rock too❤. He & the long ann ❤❤.^^
Simon, Bosnia and Herzegovina is calling!
I❤M
0:47 "Heligoland" smh 🤦♂
You get the best work trips.
Brilliant video Simon. I love Bodrum.
Arnside is in Cumbria. You walked from Cumbria to Cumbria.
Brits love Malta. Only some hate it!
Unforgettable in so many ways..left 2012
Beautiful!
Great video Simon. Some amazing sights.
If he really had been drinking all those beers and cocktails combined with eating all that food he wouldn't be standing after 48h.
Bully for you Mr know all billsmith
I’m German and currently on Helgoland and I’d say it’s not expensive. Mostly you get top quality food out of your expenses.
What is the name of the place with the long beer glasses. I cannot figure it out for the life of me!
Regarding the Gaeltacht... the Irish speaking regions. There is a lot of nonsense spoken about this. People fluent in English going on about how Irish is their first language. Here's the truth. I've been to many of these regions on multiple occasions, and I have 'never'... I'll repeat that, because it's an important word... 'never' heard a conversation being had in Irish. Based on my experience, you're more likely to overhear a conversation in Polish than Irish in the Gaeltacht.
im calling b-shit on that comment. my daughter and i ( i am irish she has learned some irish via duoling0) were in donegal in adara and glen colmcille area /and ordered our meal in irish and had some chat in irish with the waitress, in a cafe where others spoke in irish, we were travelling donegal for a few days adn stayed in the central hotel, in the bar across the road many groups were speaking irish while in conversation.. you sure you were in ireland or are you just making stuff up as even in dublin you can be in a pub with people speaking irish nearby. In areas in west belfast you have to speak irish in the shops and pubs i hope your hearing improves
Come out from under your rock
You'll hear it frequently on the Arran islands.
It's the main language 1/2 hour from where I live, in Westport Mayo. The Belmullet peninsular is also strongly Irish speaking....
Not going to say your misrepresenting, but I can only comment on my own personal experience. I've been to Westport and Belmullet (my late uncles favourite place), and not heard it.@@sandy57ful1
Taxi ? the local bus is good and cheap.
To loud music.
Maith an fear!
I love my land and country Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤,
Beautiful shots! We just found footage from the Corinth Canal from the 1970s! Super fascinating! If you want to check it out: ruclips.net/video/O1uY1FQ4-HM/видео.htmlsi=_EswcgPXUIOmLH-5
Thanks, Simon. We loved Madeira. Not too far away, and perfect climate.
Nice to see. Wish to visit

The harbour view looks stunning!
philippe ! a legend in Ghent.
well i think there are 3 breweries in Gent
Though Crocs and birds are cool.
Thumbs 👍 up. Rarely do Kakadu videos show Wallabies, a Brumby and Buffalo 🐃. Very cool. The area is rich beyond the boss Crocs and Birds.
Amazing! I didn't know this place. Thank you Simon.
Been to Antalya twice within 12 months and love it here. Full of charm and character, the old town is a great place to chill out as you amble around at your own pace. Lovely food, bars and really friendly people, it's one of my favourite places in Turkey. A place where there is something for everyone. Now after this informative video (thanks Simon) I've got a good excuse to go again and checkout the appealing places that are mentioned and look fabulous.
I was there last yr
Thank you for the video, a great 48hr taster of a beautiful and interesting area. Haven't been in Turkiye for many years. Definitely worth returning, especially with so much to see and do both in and close by Antalya. Turkiye as the destination is now in the top tier of our where to travel next list. Thank you everyone for the great video, great to see the closing photo.
Nice production team 😃 I wish I had that.
